Acular is a potent drug used for the treatment of itchy eyes caused by seasonal allergies. This drug is also used to treat swelling and redness (inflammation) that can occur after cataract surgery. This drug belongs to a class of NSAID. Acular contains generic Ketorolac, which is a non-selective COX inhibitor. It works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis by competitive blocking of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) that causes inflammation.

How to administer Acular?

For best use of Acular drops, wash your hands properly before application. Tilt your head back, pull down the lower lid of your eye with your index finger to form a pocket and hold the dropper with the other hand. Now look up and gently squeeze the dropper and remove your index finger from the lower eyelid. You should close your eyes for 2 to 3 minutes. Wipe excess liquid from outside the eye. Do not touch the tip of the container to protect from contamination. After application wash your hands and close the container.

Note: Do not use many doses at one time as it may cause an adverse reaction. In the case of overdose consult the doctor immediately for treatment.

What are the contraindications of Acular?

  • If you are allergic to Ketorolac, aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Celecoxib do not use this drug.
  • If you are taking aspirin or another NSAID then do not use this drug.
  • If you have any previous history of stomach ulcer or any other history of ulcers do not use this drug.
  • If you have severe kidney problems or are at risk of kidney failure do not use this drug.
  • If you have bleeding problems then do not use this drug.

What are the drug interactions of Acular?

Aspirin, Clopidogrel, Corticosteroids, Pentoxifylline, Fluoxetine, Probenecid, Ciprofloxacin, Furosemide, Hydrochlorothiazide, Fosinopril, Captopril, and Enalapril

Do not use Vitamins, herbal products, and dietary supplements while administering this drug.

How to store Acular?

Store this drug at room temperature 20 to 30 0C. Keep this drug away from heat and sunlight.  Keep out of reach from children.

What are the side effects of Acular?

While using these drops some patient may feel common side effects like stinging and burning of the eyes, blurry vision, redness or swelling of eyes, lips, tongue, or skin, infection in or around the eye, skin rash, hives, or skin changes, difficulty in breathing or swallowing.

What are the precautions to be kept in mind while using Acular?

  • Avoid applying this drop during lactation and breastfeeding as it may harm the fetus.
  • Do not drive or operate sophisticated machines after using this drop as it may cause blurred vision.
  • While using these drops do not use contact lenses.
