Aleve is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) and orally administered drug. It used for arthritis, sprains, and strains, headaches, muscle pain, tendonitis, tooth pain, back pain, period (menstrual) pain, and gout pain. This COX inhibitor medication stops prostaglandin synthesis.

Mechanism of action:

Aleve contains naproxen as an active constituent. It works by obstructing the action of Cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes. This enzyme is responsible for making prostaglandins in the body. The formation of Prostaglandins takes place at the site of injury or damage to cause pain and inflammation. By prohibiting the effect of COX enzymes, it reduces prostaglandin formation to decrease pain and inflammation.

What are the precautions of Aleve?

  • If you are asthma patient do not use this drug.
  • Do not use this drug if you are liver or kidney disease patient.
  • You should not use this drug if you are allergic to the ingredient of Aleve.
  • If you have any problem of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot do not use this drug.
  • Do not use this drug if you have any skin reaction.

What are the drug interactions of Aleve?

Avoid use of the following drug as it may affect the action of drug:  Cidofovir, Ketorolac, Methotrexate, Pemetrexed, Etodolac, Firocoxib, Meloxicam, Carprofen, Deracoxib, Firocoxib, Tepoxalin, Lithium, Methotrexate, Warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven, and Prednisone.

How to store Aleve?

Store Aleve at room temperature 20 to 30oC; Keep this drug away from heat and sunlight. Do not store this drug at moisture place.

How to use Aleve?

The recommended dosage of Aleve is 500 mg to 1000mg. This should be divided into two equal doses between 250 mg and 500 mg for daily consumption. Administer this drug orally with a sufficient amount of water. Maintain a gap of about 4 to 6 hours. Do not crush, chew, or break the naproxen tablet. Swallow it whole. You should take this medicine each day at same time.

Missed dose of Aleve: In the case of the missed dose take as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule.

Overdose of Aleve: In case of overdose, consult the doctor as soon as possible for treatment.

What are the side effects of Aleve?

Some common side effects that may appear while administering this drug: Stomach ache, heartburn, dizziness, rash, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, ringing in the ears, liver failure or inflammation of the liver, Low platelet count, Blood in the urine, Urinary tract infection

What are the precautions of Aleve?

  • Combining naproxen and alcohol can increase the risk of ulcer and stomach bleeding, so avoid use of alcohol while administering this drug.
  • In the case of the elderly patient, this drug should be used only after the prescription by medical health practitioner.
  • Do not use over the counter drugs as it can increase the side effects.
  • Do not use aspirin while using this medicine.
  • While lactation consult doctor before consuming this drug.
