Azelastine is an ophthalmic preparation which is used for the treatment of itching in eyes caused by allergic conjunctivitis. It is also used for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis and non-allergic rhinitis, rhinorrhea, and nasal pruritus. Azelastine hydrochloride is usually prescribed drug for the treatment of allergies in the eye.

Mechanism of action of Azelastine:

Azelastine belongs to a class of antihistamines and it is the H1-receptor antagonist. It works by inhibiting release of histamine and other intermediaries involved in the allergic response.

What are the contraindications of Azelastine?

  • Do not use this drug if you are allergic to any ingredient in Azelastine drops.
  • If you previously had any type of eye surgery, then do not use this drug.
  • In the case of liver and kidney disease do not use this drug.
  • You should not use this drug if you are suffering from bleeding disorder.
  • If you have severe heart diseases then do not use this drug.  

What are the drug interactions of Azelastine?

Do not use following medication along with Azelastine as it can affect the action of Azelastine:

Clarithromycin, Dalfopristin, Danazol, Digoxin, Amiloride, Spironolactone, Triamterene, Allopurinol, Valsartan, Bromocriptine, Diltiazem, Nicardipine, Fluvastatin, Lovastatin, Pravastatin, Simvastatin, Amiodarone, Angiotensin, Benazepril, Candesartan, Eprosartan Irbesartan, Losartan, Olmesartan, and Telmisartan.

You should not use vitamins, herbal products, and dietary supplement while using this medication.         

Storage condition of Azelastine:

Store Azelastine at room temperature 25 to 30oC; keep this drug away from heat and moisture. Keep this drug out of reach from children.

How to use Azelastine?

Azelestine is marketed as 0.5% sterile solution. It is recommended to use twice a day. Remove your contact lenses and spectacles before use. Tilt your head back and make a pouch by using a finger. Instill 2 to 3 drops in the eye and close your eye. Do not use if the colour of eye drop has changed. Close the cap after using Azelastine.

Missed dose of Azelastine:

You should take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip if the time is for next dose.

Overdose of Azelastine:

Consult the doctor for the treatment or go to the nearby hospital in the case of overdose.

What are the side effects of Azelastine?

While using this medication you may feel some common side effects such as eye burning or stinging, headaches, bitter taste, eye pain, blurred vision, excessive tiredness, sore throat, severe headache, blurred vision and swelling of eyelids.

What are the precautions of Azelastine?

  • Driving is strictly prohibited while using this medication as it can increase the side effects such as blurred vision.
  • Azelastine is an ophthalmic preparation so use this drug in the eye; do not use this medication to other parts of the body.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should consult the doctor before using this medication.
