Joe had a rather ordinary childhood and being an introvert and a bit quiet helped. In his child hood like many of us, he too lagged in his studies but that was not what got him in trouble. The new school he went on was a bigger one and had a few bullies in it. He was shy and not very proficient at defending himself, a perfect spot for bullies. Joe's response was staying quiet and trying to avoid them, their response has they moved things a notch higher and started spreading weird rumors and stories, Joe was the gossip point of the class and resultantly he was cornered, he lost even the very few friends he had.

He did try to tell his parents, all his father did was to give him a pep talk and tell him to be a man (which is a bit difficult technically, he was 11). Maybe they did not realize the extent of the bullying and thought he could handle this. Joe was way too scared of the consequences that he never thought about telling the teachers. Being alone filled him with a sense of disgust and he began to believe that everything about him was hideous and wrong. This had a bigger impact, it destroyed his self-esteem, the base of Anxiety in most cases.  He kept to himself, developed a fear of women (as he was mostly mocked by them)  and frozen mostly, when people approached him, with almost a mask of non-emotion on his face he went about to be separated even more. Even at his work he kept to himself and appeared baffled when one wanted to get cozy.

After much ado, he visited a doctor, who told him he had generalized anxiety, he was 29 then. All alone, no girlfriend, no friends, he was isolated and alone, like every other person, he too wanted to fall in love and get married and have babies. His anxiety kept him from all the pleasures life had to offer. Joe knew he was late, he had to hurry up, thankfully the doctor he visited was well aware of Anxiety. He gave him the required counseling and a drug, that helped Joe come over his condition and love and live life. It comes by the name Xanax.
