Carbimazole is an antithyroid medicine that is used in adults and children for the treatment of hyperthyroidism an overactive thyroid, which is also known as Thyrotoxicosis. It is also used as a treatment for Thyroidectomy (surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland), and before radio-iodine treatment. It reduces the thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland.

Mechanism of action of Carbimazole:

Carbimazole belongs to the class of organic compounds known as Imidazolethiones. It is a pro-drug as after absorption it converts to the active form, Methimazole. Carbimazole works by prohibiting the conversion of iodine to its unstable form. Carbimazole also stops converted iodine from getting combined with other components to form thyroid hormones. This results in a decreased production of thyroid hormones.
