Moxifloxacin is an ophthalmic preparation which is used for the treatment of eye infection (conjunctivitis) caused by susceptible bacteria. It is also used for the treatment of pneumonia, bronchitis, skin, and abdominal infections caused by bacteria. Moxifloxacin belongs to Fluoroquinolones category. Moxifloxacin kills sensitive bacteria by prohibiting the production of essential proteins needed by the bacteria to survive.

Mechanism of action of Moxifloxacin:

Moxifloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This medication works by inhibiting DNA gyrase, a type II topoisomerase, and topoisomerase IV enzymes that is essential to divide bacterial DNA, thereby inhibiting cell replication to stop bacterial growth.

What are the contraindications of Moxifloxacin?

  • Do not use this drug if you are allergic to Moxifloxacin or to any other Fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
  • Do not use this drug if you have a certain type of irregular heartbeat or uncorrected low blood potassium levels.
  • You should not use this drug if you have a history of myasthenia gravis.
  • Do not use this drug if you have stomach infection and liver problem.
  • Do not use this drug if you have joint or tendon problems and rheumatoid arthritis.

What are the drug interactions of Moxifloxacin?

You should not use following drugs while using this medication as it can affect the action of Moxifloxacin.

  • Antiarrhythmic drugs- Amiodarone, Dronedarone, Procainamide, Quinidine, Sotalol,
  • Diuretics- Furosemide, Hydrochlorothiazide
  • Corticosteroids- Prednisone
  • Diabetes medicines-Glyburide
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) - Ibuprofen, Ketorolac

Storage condition of Moxifloxacin:

You should keep this medication at room temperature 20 to 30oC. Keep this drug away from heat and moisture.

How to use Moxifloxacin?

Wash your hands properly before using Moxifloxacin eye drops. You should remove contact lenses before application of Moxifloxacin. Tilt your head back and pull down the lower eyelid by using a finger.  Keep the eye drop above your eye then press the container. Do not touch the tip of container and eye after application to prevent contamination.  

Missed dose of Moxifloxacin:

Use as soon as possible Moxifloxacin in the case of missed dose. Do not use if the time is for next dose.

Overdose of Moxifloxacin:

Don't take more than recommended dose as it can cause harmful effects. Consult the doctor if you feel overdose symptoms.

What are the side effects of Moxifloxacin?

Some side effects may appear while using this medication such as eye burning, stinging, irritation, itching, dryness, redness, tearing; or blurred vision, nausea, diarrhea, headache, vomiting, dizziness, nervousness, agitation, and nightmares.

What are the precautions of Moxifloxacin?

  • You should not drive after applying this medication as it causes drowsiness and blurred vision.
  • Do not intake alcohol using this medication to avoid the side effects.
  • Do not use any herbal products, vitamins and dietary supplements while administering this medication.
  • Do not use this drug in nose, ear and other parts of the body as it is an ophthalmic preparation.
