Details

Neomycin is an ointment which is used for the treatment of superficial bacterial eye infections. It is also used for the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy, otitis externa, skin lesions, to prevent bacteriuria and gram-negative rod bacteremia in bacteriuric patients with indwelling catheters. It is also used in combination with other bacterial drugs. Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic as well as cyclic polypeptide antibiotic. It is widely prescribed drug for the treatment of bacterial infection.

Mechanism of action of Neomycin:

It works by irreversibly binding to specific 30S-subunit proteins and 16S rRNA and inhibits protein synthesis. It causes misreading of bacterial genetic code. It interacts with phospholipid components of bacterial cell membranes, thereby increasing cell wall permeability.

What are the contraindications of Neomycin?

  • This drug is contraindicated in those patients who are allergic to any ingredients in Neomycin.
  • Do not use this drug if you have an intestinal obstruction, ulcers of the bowel, or inflammatory bowel or stomach disease.
  • Do not use this drug if your liver is not working properly.
  • If you are suffering from Myasthenia gravis, avoid using this medication.

What are the drug interactions of Neomycin?

Valsartan, Fluconazole, Itraconazole, Azithromycin; Bromocriptine, Diltiazem, Nicardipine, Fluvastatin, Lovastatin, Pravastatin, Simvastatin, Clarithromycin, Dalfopristin, Danazol, Digoxin, Amiloride, Spironolactone, Triamterene; Erythromycin, Acyclovir, Allopurinol, Amiodarone, Angiotensin, Benazepril, Candesartan, Eprosartan ,Irbesartan, Losartan, Olmesartan, and Telmisartan.

How to store Neomycin?

You should store this drug at room temperature 20 to 30oC. Keep this drug away from direct sunlight.

Method of administration of Neomycin:

Wash your hands and lie down, tilt your head back. Pull lower eyelid down take sufficient amount in your finger, gently make a thin film or rub on to the eyelid up to 4 to 6 times in a day. In severe disease, ointment may be used hourly. Do not touch the tip of container to prevent contamination. If you are using other topical preparations then wait at least for 5 min to instill the last ointment. Do not rub the eye after using this medication.

Missed dose of Neomycin:

In case you missed the dose of neomycin then take as soon as possible. Skip if it's the time for next dose and take a regular dose.

Overdose of Neomycin:

In the case of overdose consult the doctor as soon as possible.

Possible side effects of Neomycin:

You may face some common side effects while using this medication include hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness, unusual tingling or numbness of the skin, muscle twitching, and seizures.

What precautions should be followed while administering this drug?

  • This is ophthalmic preparation so do not use this drug to other parts of the body.
  • Remove your contact lenses before applying this medication. 
  • In the case of pregnancy and lactation consult a doctor before using this medication.
  • Avoid using any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement while using this medication.
