Ocufen is an ophthalmic preparation which is used for the treatment of pupil from constricting, or narrowing during eye surgery. The active constituent Flurbiprofen is also used for the management of pain, swelling, and joint stiffness from arthritis, treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteorarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. Flurbiprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the propionic acid class which is similar in action to Ibuprofen.

Mechanism of action of Ocufen:

Flurbiprofen is a non-selective COX inhibitor and inhibits the activity of both COX-1 and -2. It also inhibits prostaglandin synthesis that is involved in inflammation, pain, swelling and fever.

What are the contraindications of Ocufen?

  • Do not use this drug if you are allergic to any ingredient in Ocufen.
  • Do not use this drug you if you ever had a severe allergic reaction (eg. severe rash, hives, trouble breathing, growth in the nose, dizziness) to aspirin or a NSAID (eg, ibuprofen, celecoxib).
  • Do not use this drug if you have recently had bypass heart surgery.
  • Do not use this drug if you have any liver or kidney disorder.

What are the drug interactions of Ocufen?

Before taking this drug inform the doctor if you are taking following medications: Meloxicam, Carprofen, Deracoxib, Firocoxib, Tepoxalin, Lithium, Methotrexate, Warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven, Cidofovir, Ketorolac, Methotrexate, Pemetrexed, Etodolac, Firocoxib, and Prednisone.

How to store Ocufen?

Store Ocufen at room temperature 20 to 30oC; Keep this drug away from heat and sunlight. Do not store this drug at moisture place.

Method of administration of Ocufen:

To apply firstly remove your lenses or eye glass. Wash your hand and tilt your head back slowly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper above the eye with the tip down. Look up and away from the dropper as you press out a drop, and then close your eye. Do not touch the tip of eye drop to avoid contamination.

What are the side effects of Ocufen?

Constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; gas; headache; heartburn; nausea; stomach upset; stuffy nose, bloody or black, tarry stools; change in the amount of urine produced; chest pain; confusion; dark urine; depression; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; mental or mood changes; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; and ringing in the ears

What are the precautions of Ocufen?

  • Do not wear any contact lens that has not been approved by your doctor while administering this drug.
  • Do not use any other eye medications during treatment with Flurbiprofen ophthalmic unless your doctor tells you to.
  • In the case of lactation consult the doctor before use.
  • It is not recommended for use during the first and last trimesters of pregnancy due to possible harm to the unborn baby.
