Details

Cyclosporine is an active constituent of Sandimmune-injection which is indicated for prophylaxis of the organ rejection in kidney, liver, and heart allogeneic transplants. This is also used for the treatment of chronic rejection in patients previously treated with other immunosuppressive agents. This drug is always used with adrenal corticosteroids. Cyclosporine is a cyclic polypeptide immunosuppressant agent that contains 11 amino acid which is formed as a metabolite by the fungus species Beauveria nivea.

Mechanism of action of Sandimmune-injection

The efficiency of cyclosporine is due to specific and reversible inhibition of immune competent Lymphocytes in the G-0 or G1-phase of the cell cycle. T-lymphocytes are preferentially inhibited. The main target is T-helper cell, even though the T-suppressor cell may also be concealed. Cyclosporine also works to inhibits production of lymphocyte production and release including interleukin-2 or T-cell growth factor (TCGF).
